Please join us on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 @ 7:00pm-8:00pm

Meeting Place: Triangle Panda Park @ Oklahoma Ave NE and D Street NE.

Volunteer just 1 hour of your time to show unity in the Community for the Orange Hat Patrol partnered with Metropolitan Police Department! We will organize to patrol our streets and neighborhood trouble spots to prevent suspicious activities, call in broken street lamps, and report many other problems.

It would be especially helpful to have dog owners who don’t mind hitting the streets with their ferocious-looking (but otherwise well-behaved) pets to join the patrol.

Burglary Suspect Sought

(Washington, DC)- The Metropolitan Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest sought in two Burglaries in which elderly victims have been targeted.

Although the Department has not definitively linked both cases the circumstances indicate it is possible both burglaries were committed by the same individual.

In both instances the suspect knocked on the victims’ door, advised he was a maintenance worker, and that he needed to fix a toilet that was leaking to the below apartment.  After gaining entry the suspect went to the bathrooms and surveyed the toilets.  He then assaulted the victims and stole personal property.

In both instances the suspect was described as a Black male, approximately 5’7” – 5’8 tall.

Below is the date and location of these burglaries:

  •  June 19, 2012, 5:10 PM, in the 1400 block of Florida Avenue, NE
  • June 26, 2012, 1:30 PM, in the 1200 block of G Street, SE.

In connection with the June 19th incident, a person of interest is shown in this surveillance video signing a book in the front lobby of the building http://youtu.be/grG192eyf50

During the June 19th incident, the suspect is further described as being 40 to 45 years of age, weighing 200 to 220 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue collared shirt with 3/4-length sleeves, tan trousers, and white tennis shoes.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.

Justice for Elaine Coleman

Finally Justice for Elaine Coleman, Kingman Park Resident. Articles below are about the sentencing results.

Article from Washington Examiner

A Baltimore man was sentenced Tuesday to 26 years for fatally stabbing a woman at her home in Northeast Washington.

John William Smith Jr., 47, pleaded guilty in D.C. Superior Court in January to second-degree murder while armed in the death of 47-year-old Elaine Coleman.

Police said Smith stabbed Coleman 41 times, possibly with scissors, at her home in the 552 23rd Place NE in December. Before Coleman’s death, Smith had told witnesses that he was angry because she was getting back with her ex-boyfriend.

In 2005, Smith was charged with first-degree murder for a stabbing death of a victim who was killed with a pair of scissors, police said. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the case in 2006, and was sentenced to eight years in prison.

A D.C. restaurant worker who fatally stabbed his girlfriend 41 times in December was sentenced Tuesday to 26 years in prison.

Article from Washington Post:

John W. Smith Jr., 47, of Baltimore pleaded guilty Jan. 18 to a second-degree murder charge in the Dec. 2 death of Elaine Coleman, 47. He faced up to a 40-year sentence.

Police found Coleman fatally stabbed Dec. 4 in the bedroom of her home in the 500 block of 23rd Place NE. She had apparently been dead in the KingmanPark row house for two days. Coleman had been stabbed on her face, neck and chest, along with defensive wounds on her hands and wrists. The stab wounds around her neck had been so vicious that her spinal cord had been severed and she was nearly decapitated, according to police.

Smith was arrested Jan. 3. The medical examiner determined that Coleman’s wounds could have been caused by a pair of scissors — a tool Smith had used to fatally stab a man during a 2005 fight in Baltimore. Smith pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the case, ultimately serving five years of an eight-year sentence. He was released early for good behavior.

Smith and Coleman had an often-volatile relationship, and Smith mentioned wanting to kill Coleman, according to a police affidavit.

When Smith pleaded guilty in D.C. Superior Court, he told Judge Robert E. Morin “I’m pleading guilty ’cause I am guilty.” Smith admitted that between Dec. 2 and 3, he was with Coleman and stabbed her “numerous times.” In exchange for Smith’s plea, the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s office did not pursue additional charges in the case.

Coleman’s daughter, 24-year-old Adell Coleman, told The Post at the time of Smith’s plea that she hoped Smith would receive the maximum sentence. “I have faith in our judicial system now that they see he has been given so many opportunities to hurt people,” she said at the time.
