Joel Elias Spingarn Senior High School Closing: The Green Wave recedes

Interesting article about the closing of Joel Elias Spingarn Senior High School and how its impact can be a lasting one for the children that attend the school. Please check out this link below.

Tonight, Joel Elias Spingarn Senior High School — alma mater of Elgin Baylor, Dave Bing, and many other less household-named stars — plays its last boys basketball game. Eyed as the location of a vocational training center, Spingarn will close as a general admission high school after the school year ends. The Post’s Roman Stubbs looks at the end of its six-decade run that will live in hoops history: “Wearing the Green Wave uniform was more than a high school experience for generation after generation of players; it was a chance to connect with playground legends, college all-Americans, first-round NBA draft picks, Hall of Famers, and two stars named among the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players.”

Monthly HHW/E-Cycling/ Document Shredding, Sat., Feb. 2, Ft. Totten Transfer Station

The Department of Public Works announced today its next monthly Household Hazardous Waste/E-Cycling/ Personal Document Shredding drop-off is Saturday, February 2, between 8 am and 3 pm at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station. To safely dispose of batteries with lithium or batteries of greater than 9 volts, put clear, masking or electrical tape on the batteries’ terminals or sandwich the batteries between two layers of tape (e.g. flat button cells). These batteries should be placed in a container separate from other batteries that don’t require being taped.

“We are asking residents to tape lithium-based batteries as well as batteries of greater than 9 volts so they don’t cause a fire while being transported to a recycling center,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. “Most commonly used batteries – A, AAA, C, D, 6-volt and 9-volt – don’t need to be taped unless their packaging identifies them as lithium-based. ” Lithium-based batteries are most commonly found in cell phones, digital cameras and laptops. Also, hearing aids, watches and keyless remotes typically use button cells, containing lithium. Similarly, cordless power tools use battery packs that are greater than 9 volts and/or lithium-based.

District residents may bring toxic items, such as pesticides, batteries and cleaning fluids to Ft. Totten, along with computers, televisions and other unwanted electronic equipment. Personal document shredding also is available that day and residents may bring up to five boxes of materials to be shredded. No business or commercial material will be accepted.

To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the Saturday drop-off, DPW will accept household hazardous waste and e-cyclables only on the Thursday before the first Saturday of the month (January 31, from 1 pm to 5 pm). While DPW normally offers personal document shredding during the Saturday event, items for shredding cannot be accepted on Thursdays because these documents cannot be protected until the shredding contractor arrives on Saturday.

For a list of all household hazardous waste and e-cyclables accepted by DPW, please click on the HHW link at http://www.dpw.dc.govhttp://www.dpw. dc.gov>.

Directions to Ft. Totten: Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street.

Information RE Spingarn Closing

File:SpingarnHS DC.jpg

Frozen Tropics has an excellent post on the proposed closing of Spingarn, and its effect on the proposed car barn (answer: there is no effect). The post is based largely on a Washington City Paper article.

As a parent in Kingman Park, my biggest take away is that my son would (if nothing changes in the next 14 years) no longer go to Spingarn, a tier 4 school in decline, but would instead likely go to Eastern High School, Dunbar, or Woodson High School.  On page 43 of the IFF Report, which was created at the Mayor’s request, it reads that “DCPS recently renovated and restructured Eastern High school and rebuilt Woodson High School. Higher performance is anticipated for both these Tier 4 schools.” As a parent, would I rather my son go to a failing school, or a school on the rise?

Spingarn’s closing would end an important chapter of the District’s history. It boasts countless illustrious alumni including:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spingarn_High_School. Closing Spingarn would be a difficult pill to swallow for the school’s many amazing and accomplished graduates. But if it’s a question of what’s best for the education of the District’s current children, the answer is not so simple.
