Invitation Letter to Mayor Gray on Reservation 13

Hello Everyone,

Below is a letter that was sent to Mayor Vince Gray about Reservation 13.        I signed this letter with other ANC Commissioners to get the plan and perspective for Reservation 13 from Mayor Gray. Once the Mayor respond to this letter, I will post an update.

If anyone have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Best,

Lisa White

December 20, 2011

The Honorable Vincent C. Gray
Mayor
District of Columbia
1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Suite 316
Washington, DC 20004

Dear Mayor Gray,

As ANC commissioners representing Single Member Districts adjacent to or near Reservation 13, we invite you to attend a community meeting to share your vision for the future development of the 67-acre site. We also invite Victor Hoskins, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, to join you in providing an update on the status of development proposals for the site.

For more than a decade, residents in our neighborhoods have worked tirelessly to see the Hill East Waterfront Development at Reservation 13 become a reality. This master development plan, widely supported in our neighborhoods, envisions a mixed-use retail and residential project that extends neighborhood streets to the Anacostia River.

Unfortunately, due to the economy and other factors, these development plans have stalled. Instead, Reservation 13 consists of crumbling infrastructure and dilapidated buildings. The site has become a social services hub for the entire District of Columbia. While our neighborhoods have had to deal with the negative consequences that come with concentrating so many services and people in one small area, the District of Columbia continues to lose out on revenue that could be generated by developing the site.

Recently, you’ve indicated an interest in using a portion of the site for a Washington Redskins training facility. Your constituents in our neighborhoods would like to learn more about this idea and how such a facility would fit into the master development plan. Your participation in a community meeting would help residents get a better sense of your vision for the site.

Brian Flahaven, commissioner for ANC 6B09, will follow up with your staff to find a date and time that works best for you, ideally in January 2012. We also hope to hold the meeting on the site, perhaps at St. Coletta of Greater Washington, 1901 Independence Avenue SE.

Reservation 13 is one of the last large, underutilized, undeveloped parcels of land with Metro access left in the District of Columbia. We are committed to working with you to support future development at Reservation 13 that increases the quality of life in our neighborhoods, our wards and the entire city.

Thank you for your consideration of our invitation.

Sincerely,

Nicholas Alberti, Commissioner, ANC 6A04

Sustainable DC Working Group Kick-off Meeting

Sustainable DC Working Group Kick-off Meeting

Please join Mayor Vincent Gray on Tuesday, November 29th from 6:00 to 8:30 pm at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center as we present the progress from the “Start in September” outreach, and establish working groups to develop recommendations to make Washington, DC the greenest, healthiest, most inclusive and livable city in the nation!

We will begin the meeting together as a group to hear from Mayor Gray, review input to date, and map out the Sustainable DC planning process. We will then break out into nine topical working groups: the built environment, climate, energy, food, nature, transportation, waste, water, and the green economy.

We invite you to actively participate in one (or more) of these working groups, which will delve into the details of these topics over the course of four to six meetings from December through February. At the mid-point and again at the end of the working group process, all participants will come together to share ideas and address the critical connections among these working group topics.

No Way to Mega Bus at RFK!

Article copied from City Paper by Lydia DePillis

Today, the District Department of Transportation tweets, Megabus moves into Union Station’s parking deck, as part of the plan to make the station into a multi-modal transportation hub. Right now, everybody fits, since the charter tour buses that also pick up and drop off passengers there are entering the winter slow season. But come spring, when the station averages some 100 buses daily, there won’t be room for everyone to park while their charges eat lunch or dinner.

Where are they all going to go? The Union Station Redevelopment Corporation, which manages station operations, isn’t quite sure. “This information is still under study including travel time, travel route, amenities available and neighborhood concerns,” writes USRC director David Ball. “All these items will be weighed in making a decision.”

Well, it’s getting close to scheduling for the spring already, and tour bus operators are still in the dark. According to tour guide Tim Krepp of D.C. Like a Local, all they know is that they’ll have to relocate, and that parking at a satellite location will be more than twice as expensive.

According to the D.C. Department of Planning and Economic Development, two sites are under consideration: The parking lot at RFK Stadium and the empty lot around the decaying Crummell School behind the Hechts Bulding off New York Avenue. RFK is problematic because it’s further away and buses would likely have to go through residential neighborhoods, since the Capitol Police won’t allow them on Independence and Constitution. And the Crummell School lot is supposed to get redeveloped soon, so parking buses there wouldn’t be a great signal to the neighborhood (although the recently-issued request for offers received no responses from charter schools—zero—so it may be sitting around for a long while yet anyway as the District figures out what to do with it).

Then there’s the question of whether the buses would even go to those faraway locations at all, or if they’d prefer to just drive around the city streets, spewing fumes into the neighborhood. Solve one problem, create another!

Kingman Park Community and surrounding areas (Hill East and Reservation 13) is always a dumping ground. Please come up with another solution for the Mega Bus Station other than our community.

Just my take,

Lisa White ANC Commissioner SMD 7D01- Kingman Park
