Traffic/Parking Restrictions Take Effect April 1

On Benning Road From 21st Street To 24th Street The DC Streetcar construction team will start work April 1 on the installation of OCS (Overhead Cantenary System) foundations at the streetcar route’s Eastern Turnaround on Benning Road. The OCS foundations are installed underground at designated points and provide the base for mounting the poles and wiring that deliver power to run the streetcars.To accommodate the construction activity, the following traffic and parking restrictions are necessary:

April 1 through April 19Eastbound Benning Road (south side), 21st Street to 24th Street

Ø  At 21st, eastbound Benning Road traffic will be channeled into a single lane to 24th.

Ø  The sidewalk on the south side of Benning from 21st to 24th will be closed. Signs will direct pedestrians to cross to sidewalks on the north side of Benning.

Ø  Motorists will have no access to 23rd Place from Benning Road. To reach 23rd Place, local traffic (residents and visitors) will be directed to use the alleyway that runs between 21st and 24th Streets.

Ø  Left turns and U-turns from Benning onto 21st, 23rd, and 24th will be prohibited.

Ø  Vehicular and pedestrian access to establishments with parking lots in this area – T-Nails, 2305 Benning; MillionMan Tires, 2101 Benning; and the Crown gas station, Benning at 21st – will be maintained through side streets and gaps between the traffic-control devices.Advance warning signs will be posted. The schedule is subject to change due to weather, material and equipment availability and other unforeseen conditions.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – ShamrockFest ’13 returns to the RFK Stadium Festival Grounds with a mix of musical legends, hot emerging artists and a jaw-dropping DJ lineup on Saturday, March 16 from 1-9 p.m. With nine stages and over 40 incredible live bands and DJs, ShamrockFest is regarded as one of the most popular St. Patty’s Day parties in America. For eight action-packed hours, shamrock-clad partygoers can enjoy simultaneous live performances featuring rock, reggae, folk and of course Irish music throughout the massive festival area. On Monday, February 25 through Friday March 1, work crews will dig five small test pits within a one-block location of Benning Road NE in order to coordinate proposed utility placement. The impacts will include:

Eastbound Benning Road between 24th and 25th Streets:

Left lane closure, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm

Pedestrian crosswalk at eastbound Benning and 24th Street:

Sidewalk closure, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm

Parking on eastbound Benning Road between 21st and 26th Streets: Parking closure. In order to keep two lanes of traffic flowing down eastbound Benning Road the curb lane between 21st and 26th streets will be closed for parking and it will become a travel lane.

Media Removal

On Monday, February 25 through Friday March 8, work crews will continue to remove portions of the median on the middle and eastern end of the Hopscotch Bridge in advance of future streetcar platform construction at the same locations. The impacts will include:

(Washington, DC) – The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has provided the following information associated with the 2013 March for Life event scheduled for Friday, January 25, 2013. Public Meeting on Safety Improvement Project for 17th and 19th Streets: Tonight Jun. 25, 2012 @ 6:30pm

DDOT To Host Public Meeting on Safety Improvement Project for 17th and 19th Streets

Community Stakeholders Are Encouraged to Attend and Provide Input on Transportation Safety Improvements

(Washington, D.C.) On Monday, June 25 the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will host a public meeting to begin discussing roadway improvements to enhance pedestrian and vehicular safety on 17th and 19th Streets between Benning Road, NE and Potomac Avenue, SE.

As part of the safety improvement initiative for this corridor DDOT is further evaluating the transportation safety improvements that were identified in the 2006 Capitol Hill Infrastructure Study to determine which improvements will be most feasible to implement.  Included in the improvements that are being evaluated for this corridor are new roadway markings and signage, curb extensions (also known as bulb-outs), ADA sidewalk ramps and traffic signal upgrades.

This meeting is the first in a series of public meetings that will be held to share information and collect input to determine the safety improvements for the corridor.

 United House of Prayer for All People Memorial Day Parade

On Saturday, May 26, 2012, the United House of Prayer for All People will hold its annual Memorial Day parade. This event will begin at 10:00 am and will conclude at approximately 3:00 pm.  The parade will take place along the following route:

  • Begin: 6th & M Streets, NW
  • North on 6th Street to S Street, NW
  • West on S Street to 13th Street, NW
  • South on 13th Street to Logan Circle, NW
  • Southwest around Logan Circle to P Street, NW
  • East on P Street to 7th Street, NW
  • South on 7th Street to M Street, NW
  • East on M Street to 6th Street, NW where the parade will end

Thunder Alley Event

On Saturday, May 26th and Sunday May 27th from 11:00 am-5:00 pm, the Thunder Alley event will take place. It is the official vending location for Rolling ThunderThe following street closures will be in effect:

Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Ride 

On Sunday, May 27, 2012 the annual Rolling Thunder Rally will take place.  The event will begin at approximately 11:00 am and will conclude at approximately 5:00 pm.  The motorcycle ride will proceed along the following route:

  • Beginning in the North Pentagon parking lot (Virginia)
  • Crossing the Arlington Memorial Bridge into DC to 23rd Street, NW
  • North on 23rd Street to Constitution Avenue, NW
  • East on Constitution Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
  • East on Pennsylvania Avenue to 3rd Street, NW
  • South on 3rd Street to Independence Avenue, NW
  • West on Independence Avenue to West Basin Drive, NW
  • Southwest on West Basin Drive to Ohio Drive, NW
  • Northwest on Ohio Drive to Franklin D. Roosevelt Park, NW, where the ride will end.

 Memorial Day Parade

On Monday, May 28th, 2012, the National Memorial Day Parade will take place from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm.  The streets along the following route will be closed from 5:00 am until 7:00 pm.

  • Starting from 7th Street & Madison Drive, ending at 17th Street & Constitution Avenue, NW
  • Also closed: 7th Street from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue, NW

Motorists traveling in the area of both of these events may encounter traffic delays and heavy pedestrian traffic due to the extended road closures.  In addition to the roads listed above, many roads leading to these processional routes may be closed as well. Please use extreme caution when driving in these areas.

DC Newest Speed Cameras: Slow Down and Save a Life!

The Metropolitan Police Department announced today the deployment of new automated speed enforcement locations beginning on or after May 7, 2012.

The deployment locations for the Photo Enforcement Units will continue to be at sites with the highest number of crashes and injuries, calls for police service, and high speed volume. MPD also considered recommendations or requests from the Department of Transportation, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions and civic or citizen associations.

The 30-day educational phase will commence on May 7, 2012, when violators will begin receiving warning citations.  On June 6, 2012, MPD will begin issuing live moving citations to violators.  The new photo enforcement locations are as follows:
