OSSE ESEA: NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND MEETING

LETTER OF INVITATION TO OSSE ESEA FLEXIBILITY PRESENTATION

 Dear Community Members;

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and State Board of Education Representative Dorothy Douglas would like to extend a special invitation to our February presentation regarding the agency’s flexibility request to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), commonly known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

 As you may know, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requires 100% of students to be proficient in both math and reading by 2014. If students fail to meet yearly proficiency targets, schools face various repercussions. Because Congress has been unable to amend the legislation, President Obama has allowed states to request flexibility from some NCLB requirements.

The District of Columbia, along with 39 other states, is submitting a flexibility request.  In crafting its application, OSSE will host  a series of community meetings to engage the public, disseminate information, and let parents, teachers, and students know what this waiver means to them.  The District’s draft application is available at www.osse.dc.gov.  Comments on the draft can be sent to osse.comments@dc.gov.

The Ward 7 presentation will happen:
February 13th, 2012

6:00-8:00PM

IDEA Public Charter School -1027 45th St, NE

We would love for you to join us and participate in this critical education issue.
